I read this book when I was 8 and when I was 18. It carries substantial messages about fate, perspective, and effort. It's set in the desert and is based loosely on history - so if you're into either of those, this book won't disappoint.My favorite book.

One can not create art, something beyond themselves, unless they have experienced the taxes of the world. Garcia's story is an adventure and an ample symbolic journey of growing into adulthood. It does well to give readers cultural references, so the place feels real enough. My main gripe is that in a book, in a sense, about poetry that there is none given. It perfectly highlights the vastness of the world and of history, and after reading it I was in marvel and at awe of how beautifully the author captures the wonder and beauty of the world. When I first read this book in 2005, I thought it was one of the BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR. I just LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it absolutely. I thought it was a wonderfully, magically compelling read.
