Ilustration Concering Books خان الخليلي
Rating: 3.5/4.0 I loved how the author described the village and how he made all the characters very human. Despite the book having a simple story, the author's underlying message was that there is nothing perfect. Nobody is perfect and no place is perfect. The story is set in the 1940s, in the world war and it tells the story of a family who moves from their neighborhood to another neighborhood named Khan Al Khalili (Title of the book) for safety purposes. Two brothers fall in love with the same girl. Who is going to get the girl? You have read to know this. But don't get it wrong. Although love is a big part of the book but it is not all what the book is about. I would call the story more relating to humanity and human nature in different situations than just being about love. I would recommend you reading this. Nice reading.

wonderful novel Najeeb Mo7foth is a wonderful writer. the theme, the style of writing, the plot each one of them has been made in a perfect way. it is the kind of novels which once you start reading it, you can't put it a way till you finish.i really enjoyed reading it :)Great classic story about Egypt :)
reading experience was badly marred by pedestrian translation - roger allen's afterword talks about the "poetic quality" of mahfouz's descriptions but the english versions are just clunky, like: "the way their fringes sparkled in the sunlight was eye-catching." maybe the original is like this and it's a stylistic clash on my part, but if not then come on.that aside i can certainly see why mahfouz got a nobel, even if it wasn't for this book - the characters here are unconventional leads, all of

It's very similar in pace and substance to his previous book about Hamida and al-Midakk, but in this one there is more emphasis on the two main characters (the brothers) and less focus on the side characters (the other book was about everyone and no one). I liked both but neither comes close to Mahouz's later work (the trilogy or "the thief and the dogs").
Very good book. Hailed by some as the first proper arabic novel. Only three stars to differentiate it from Mahfouz's later masterpieces.
not quite as good as midaq alley by the same, but still nice.
I didn't get the point! what was that all about?! was it just some ideas he wanted to tell us on the tongue of El ma3lem NoNo , Ahmed rashed?!first : that ahmed 3akef saw alyaa2 face to face is not justified and didn't lead to any point else, except how el (m3lm nono) joked about it resembling alya2 with a nuclear bomb :S Second: in the min. the author said how Roshdi's windows was like ahmed 3akef's one overlooking nawal's I guessed everything else, that they are going to fall in love, and
