finally finished, just in time to commemorate the Arab Spring (1st annivererary, that is!). great book whch begins horribly (for the characters) and just goes on to end horribly (again, for the characters). a true heartbreaker. a must read for anyone into Egypt!
This is the first classical arabic novel I read, with a taste very different to English novels that took a while to get used to but left me captivated. I love the way the author showed how each character's priorities and behaviour changed differently in response to the situations they're put in, and the gloomy ending was suitable to the direction the story was going despite being such a shocker.

Naguib Mahfouz has a very unique style of writing and it just meshes well with me. Its beautiful and coarse and it contains both the ugly and the beautiful. I would love to read more of his stuff. Thank you Abby for the book, I don't think I would have found it myself!
I found out about this book because I found a reference to Omar Sharif movie; which I could not access quickly. So, I read the book.Original Arabic Bidaya wa-Nihaya published 1949. This translation from 1985. Won a Nobel Prize for Literature. I did not read paperback. My local library connection found a hard cover.Unfortunately, the issues presented in this book are still relevant 2019. Sad.
I almost didn't finish reading this because I found the plot so depressing. The writing was good, but this was a very dismal book.
Four passions drive the plot of this book, a realistic and linear narrative by the Arab worlds greatest novelist. The book tells the story, set in the mid-1930's, of a middle class Cairo family hit by a recent misfortune. The passions are those of the four children approaching young adulthood. If the genre is realism, an unmistakable tinge of naturalism also infuses this tale. The Freudian idea of human "drives" fascinated writers at the time, including Naguib Mahfouz. As the story develops, the

Representaion In Pursuance Of Books
Particularize Books In Favor Of بداية ونهاية

This was a beautifully written book. Humans never change. We're always falling in love, never have as much money as we'd like to have, are envious of those with more, and then we die.finally finished, just in time to commemorate the Arab Spring (1st annivererary, that is!). great book whch begins horribly (for the characters) and just goes on to end horribly (again, for the characters). a true heartbreaker. a must read for anyone into Egypt!
