Im afraid I found this very difficult to get on with, confusing and hard to relate to. I understand its considered an important book and its had some very positive reviews, but the narration jumps about in time and place and although I could follow the central thesis about sectarian strife, as a whole it was frankly beyond me. Its set in Kuwait and follows the lives of three boys as they grow up in turbulent times (the Iran-Iraq War, the Iraq-Kuwait War), opening slightly in the future in 2010
The novel was monotonous to read. It could not create nor maintain interest. Some of the characters left a touch but most were bland. I also partly attribute my dislike of the novel to my ignorance of the socio-political situation of the country.

3.5 stars for a very decent difficult read of a subject I was not very familiar with. The invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, Shia v. Sunni, families torn apart, youth rebellion, love and honor. Really well written and I used Google to help with words I didnt know. Written from the perspective of 5 teenage boys, different faiths but love of each other. Glad I completed it.
One of the best novels I've read ever. I read it two years ago and still remember how amazing it was!
I loved some of the main characters, the writer's style is intriguing and beautiful. However, his first book will always be my favorite
Too long, too many details but it made me cry, smile, laugh and freak out every time this sentence was written"الفئران آتية إحمو الناس من الطاعون"I love how much this book made me miss home but I hated it because the cliffhanger and the fact that i have no idea what am I suppose to think about the end.But the ending feels similar to an Indian movie (Rang De Basanti).

Narration Concering Books

A story of a group of Kuwati friends from different religious sects Katkout. They can't understand why the various divisions occur between religions and sects and establish a radio station to broadcast their views. In time they are labelled as extremists.Told in two parallel timescales. The first covers their teens through the Iraqi invasion, gulf war(s) and 9/11. Wise humour is issued by Mama Hissa who has one of the best lines "Don't look for truth on the lips of liars". The second covers aIm afraid I found this very difficult to get on with, confusing and hard to relate to.
